The Best Exercise Games for the Xbox Kinect

Ho Ho Ho! Happy day-after-Christmas!

So, you overate for Thanksgiving with turkey, pumpkin pie, and a dozen other thigh-enlarging foods. Then you doubled up on Christmas with candy, cookies, and another feast.

Perhaps someone very nice got you a brand new Xbox for Christmas. The good news is, if you have the Kinect add-on, you CAN get a lot of exercise and lose weight.

The question I hear a lot is, is it really possible to lose weight using video games? The answer I always give is the same one. Yes, but only if you STICK to it and really put all of your energy into it. In other words, sitting on a sofa playing Halo is probably not going to do it for you. But if you get off the couch and dance with all your energy to Dance Central 2 or Kinect Sports, as long as you’re breaking a sweat and your heartrate is elevated for a good 20 minutes, and you’re controlling your portions while you eat, you WILL lose weight.

There are a lot of active motion games out there. A lot of them sound good on paper, but are just not great games. Others you wouldn’t suspect would give you a great workout, but once you pop the game in you’ll be surprised. On this site, we try to review all of them to help you decide which games are worth paying your hard-earned money for. There’s a special list I keep updated that has what I consider to be the best Kinect fitness games around.

So take the rest of the four days off, but starting on January 1, 2012, let’s make a resolution to jump, dance, and twist our way to fitness!

Here’s some late breaking news! Best Buy is holding an after-Xmas sale with some great prices on Kinect games, including Winter Stars for $10, Twister Mania for $15, and a bunch more.

Looking forward to dropping the baby weight!

I was wondering if Microsoft has done any testing for the accuracy of the calorie tracking system? I am a master’s student in exercise science and would love to see some literature on this.
